Finding a Stud

Need to find a stud but without a stud finder? First, look at your baseboard. Nails on the upper part of baseboards are often nailed into studs. Air ducts are often placed in between studs. You can flash a light across your wall to look for nailheads, which will be hammered into studs. Look for wallboard seems as well. You can even knock across the wall to listen for sound differences. Finally, if you have a compass on hand, the needle will point toward the nails in a stud.

Once you have determined where a stud is, measure down the wall. Studs are usually either 16 or 24 inches apart.
